When Should You Go to the ER?

In a scary moment it can be hard to know whether to call 911, rush to the emergency room, or head to urgent care. Choosing correctly protects your health and can save you thousands of dollars. This guide explains the warning signs that always mean the ER, the situations urgent care handles well, and how to decide quickly.

What the ER Is For

The emergency room exists for life- and limb-threatening conditions. It is open 24/7 and staffed to stabilize the sickest and most injured patients, with immediate access to imaging, surgery, and critical-care teams.

Because of that capability, ER visits are the most expensive way to get care. Reserve it for true emergencies — not routine problems that a primary care or urgent care visit can handle.

Call 911 or Go to the ER Immediately

Seek emergency care right away for: chest pain or pressure, difficulty breathing, signs of stroke (face drooping, arm weakness, slurred speech), severe or uncontrolled bleeding, a serious head injury, seizures, fainting, sudden confusion, a severe allergic reaction, or thoughts of harming yourself.

Also go for major trauma, deep wounds, broken bones with visible deformity, severe burns, poisoning, or any symptom that feels life-threatening. When in doubt about breathing, the heart, or the brain, do not wait — call 911.

When Urgent Care Is Enough

Urgent care centers handle non-life-threatening problems that still need same-day attention: minor cuts needing stitches, sprains, mild fractures, fevers, flu, ear infections, urinary infections, rashes, and minor burns.

Visits are far cheaper and faster than the ER for these issues, and most centers offer X-rays and basic labs on site.

When to Call Your Primary Care Doctor Instead

For ongoing or non-urgent concerns — medication refills, chronic condition check-ins, mild symptoms that have lasted days, or preventive care — your primary care provider is the right first call.

Many practices offer same- or next-day sick visits and telehealth, which can save an unnecessary trip.

How to Decide in the Moment

Ask yourself three questions: Could this be life-threatening? Is it getting rapidly worse? Does it involve breathing, the heart, or the brain? If yes to any, choose the ER.

If the problem is uncomfortable but stable and you can safely travel, urgent care or your doctor is usually the better, more affordable choice.
